Alexia Lewnes developed an interest in children's issues while working as a reporter in Cairo, Egypt, in the early 1990s. Since then, she has worked as a writer and editor for the United Nations Children's Fund and as a freelancer for magazines. Lewnes has written stories ranging from the impact of privatization on Egyptian women and children, to homelessness in New York City, to the child rights movement in Brazil. A graduate of the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism, she has spoken at international conferences and at journalism schools on media ethics and the reporting of child and adolescent issues. In 1997, she was awarded a Prudential Fellowship for Children and the News, a program dedicated to improving media coverage of children's issues. She lives in New York City.
